I could be arguing in my spare time…

Yesterday I told my students that you have to have an argument in good writing. I wonder if this would help them.

No, it wouldn’t.

  1. not all good writing has an argument. examples: dostoevsky, faulkner, us grant’s wonderful memoir.

  2. Just contradiction. Narrative if you prefer, but I don’t want narrative in the students’ essays. I want argument.
